Zuul

Order: Ornithischia · Suborder: Thyreophora · Infraorder: Ankylosauria · Family: Ankylosauridae
Zuul was a heavily armoured herbivorous dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period in what is now Montana. Named after the winged creature from a well-known 1984 film, this ankylosaur reached approximately 20 feet in length. Like other members of its family, Zuul possessed a short-snouted, horned skull and a distinctive bony tail club—a formidable defensive weapon against the large predators that roamed its ancient environment.

What makes Zuul particularly valuable to paleontology is the exceptional completeness of its fossil record. The specimen preserves not only the skull and skeleton but also extensive body armour, the heavy tail club, and remarkably, patches of soft tissue and skin. This level of preservation is rare and has given scientists an unusually detailed window into how the plates, spikes, and other protective structures were arranged across the living animal's body.
As a plant-eater clad in bony plates and armed with a powerful tail club, Zuul was well-equipped to defend itself against predation. The combination of its protective armour and weaponized tail made it a formidable presence in its ecosystem, able to both forage for vegetation and resist attacks from larger theropod carnivores of the time.
