Falcarius — meaning "sickle-maker" — was a primitive therizinosaur that lived during the Early Cretaceous period in what is now Utah. Reaching approximately 13 feet (4 meters) in length, it occupies a significant place in the theropod family tree as a transitional form caught between two very different ways of life. While many of its relatives were predators, Falcarius shows clear signs of a shift toward plant-eating, making it one of paleontology's more compelling windows into evolutionary change.

The dinosaur retained certain features typical of predatory theropods while simultaneously displaying early versions of the leaf-shaped teeth and broader body proportions that would become hallmarks of later, more specialized plant-eating therizinosaurs. This combination of ancestral and derived characteristics documents a major dietary transition within the theropod lineage — a shift from meat-eating to herbivory that was once difficult to trace in the fossil record.

Falcarius is notably well understood for an animal of its age, in large part because it was recovered from an extensive bone bed containing the remains of many individuals. That abundance of material has allowed paleontologists to study its anatomy in considerable detail, cementing its reputation as a valuable example of evolution in action among the dinosaurs.
