Dilong, whose name means "emperor dragon," was a small carnivorous dinosaur that lived during the Early Cretaceous period in what is now China. At approximately two meters (6–7 feet) in length, Dilong was a lightly built predator that bore little resemblance to the massive tyrannosaurs that would dominate later in the Cretaceous. Despite its modest size, Dilong holds considerable significance in paleontology.

The most remarkable aspect of Dilong's fossil record is the preservation of simple filament-like feathers on its remains. This discovery provided crucial evidence that early tyrannosauroids—and possibly the ancestors of giant tyrannosaurs—may have been covered in feathers, at least during their youth or when they remained small. The finding suggested that feathering was a characteristic feature of the tyrannosaur lineage far earlier and more broadly than previously understood.

Dilong's fossilized remains transformed scientific understanding of how tyrannosaurs appeared and evolved. Rather than picturing the entire group as scaled, reptilian giants, researchers recognized that the lineage's smaller, ancestral members likely possessed feathered integument. This shift in perspective underscores how individual fossil discoveries can reshape our comprehension of entire dinosaur families and their evolutionary history.
