Proceratosaurus was a small carnivorous theropod that roamed England during the Middle Jurassic period. Measuring approximately 10 feet in length, this dinosaur held an important place in the evolutionary history of one of the most successful predatory lineages. Its name, meaning "before Ceratosaurus," reflects an early misconception about its classification. When the creature was first described in 1910, it was initially categorized as a species of Megalosaurus. German paleontologist Friedrich von Huene recognized it as a distinct genus in 1923, theorizing at that time that it was an early relative of the crested theropod Ceratosaurus based on similarities in a small crest preserved at the base of its snout.

Modern paleontological research has since reinterpreted Proceratosaurus's place in dinosaur phylogeny. Rather than being ancestral to Ceratosaurus, the creature is now recognized as an early member of Tyrannosauroidea, the broader family that eventually gave rise to the giant predators of the Cretaceous period. Its nasal crest draws comparison to similar structures seen in later tyrannosauroids such as Guanlong. Known primarily from a well-preserved skull, Proceratosaurus exemplifies the modest, lightly built forms from which the tyrannosaur lineage originated, documenting how these apex predators began as small, crested hunters before evolving into the colossal species like Tyrannosaurus rex.
